The Municipal Wessenberg Gallery has its roots in the collection of Constance’s last diocesan administrator, Ignaz Heinrich Freiherr von Wessenberg (deceased in 1860). Since then, the collection has been continually expanded through purchases by the city, and private donations.

Its key aspects: Art from Southwestern Germany and the Lake Constance area; the collection also encompasses contemporary art. In the historic exhibition rooms, objects from the collection, and special exhibitions are displayed alternately.

The space of Wessenberg Gallery is limited; a permanent exhibition of the entire collection remains impossible. Still, the gallery’s exhibition concept is oriented towards its own objects; it constantly integrates them into respective special exhibitions, and processes them systematically.
